Throughout summer of 2025, Madeline “Maddy” Murphy, of Wilbraham, Mass., has served as a part-time communications intern with Eastern States Exposition’s (ESE) Marketing department. In this role, she drafts press releases and newsletters, assists with social media content and supports the execution of public-facing campaigns and events leading up to The Big E.
Murphy joins ESE as a rising junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst where she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in journalism with a concentration in public relations. In addition to her major, Murphy is also completing two minors in political science and public policy. Her course load and involvement at UMass reinforce her value as a beneficial addition to the team.
Last summer, Murphy worked as a marketing intern at Union Station in Springfield, Mass. There she contributed to the enhancement of the public image of the station through event planning, drafting media pitches and creating content for social media. She said this experience taught her the importance of community relations, which is a lesson she hopes to carry into her internship at ESE.
When asked why she chose ESE, Murphy said, "Personally, I have always loved coming to The Big E every fall and the opportunity to help the Fair excited me. Eastern States Exposition and The Big E are so vast and complex when it comes to their public relations. Whether it’s community relations, media relations or government relations, the list goes on. I knew that I had the opportunity to learn from the team and gain significant experience that will help me in my professional career.”
Outside of work, Murphy donates her time to the Springfield Public Schools and learn-to-skate programs in the surrounding communities.
ESE has enjoyed having Murphy on the team for the summer season and looks forward to having her assist Marketing during the Fair!
