On Tuesday, June 11, Feed the Children held a Resource Rally, sponsored by Price Rite, at Eastern States Exposition (ESE) in West Springfield, Mass. The charitable organization partnered with the West Springfield Boys & Girls Club and the Parish Cupboard to serve 400 families in the immediate community to combat food insecurity. In addition to leadership from the organizations involved, Mayor Will Reichelt of West Springfield attended the event and lent a hand.
Since 1979, Feed the Children has worked to end childhood hunger throughout the United States. Their mission states that no child should go to sleep hungry. They provide resources to families throughout the nation to help children grow and thrive.
Price Rite operates more than 50 grocery stores across the Northeast, the first of which opened in West Springfield. This rally aligned with that location’s 30th anniversary, and event organizers felt there was no better way to celebrate the occasion than by giving back to the community that gave the grocery group its successful start.
During the event, Joe Allegro, senior director of corporate partnerships for Feed the Children, stated that 10% of families in West Springfield live at or below the poverty level. Other speakers included Dan D’Angelo, the executive director of the West Springfield Boys & Girls Club, Price Rite President Kevin McDonnell.
“With nearly 48% of households in Hampden County experience food insecurity, this is a critical issue in our region” explained Mayor Reichelt in a social post about the event. He also offered heartfelt appreciation to the teams that made Tuesday’s Resource Rally such a success.
ESE extends congratulations to Price Rite on its 30th anniversary. As the host site for more than 120 events throughout the calendar year, ESE rejoices when such initiatives align so closely with its mission.
During The Big E, ESE partners with Rachel’s Table of Western Mass., a Springfield-based food rescue service that distributes donated and specially purchased foods to agencies that feed hungry families throughout Western Mass. In 2024, The Big E’s concessionaires donated more than 3,000 pounds in food donations to Rachel’s Table. Additionally, beef purchased by ESE at the 4-H Beef Auction is given to local food shelters each fall, and monetary support made possible by the ESE-West Springfield Trust made a grant for the Parish Cupboard possible in 2024.
