In 1926, Helen Osborne Storrow (1864-1944), a dedicated Eastern States Exposition Trustee and chairwoman of the Home Department, was decorating a temporary structure to depict an early American kitchen when the thought to have a full-scale building occurred to her. She discussed the possibility with friends and eventually was introduced to Arthur Gilbert, Commissioner of Agriculture for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Gilbert told Storrow about his 18th-century summer home, which she purchased for $200 in 1927 and moved to West Springfield from West Brookfield, Mass. After that, additional antique buildings were purchased, dismantled and reconstructed to create Storrowton Village Museum. The unique acquisition of the buildings and development of this site is just the beginning of the museum’s fascinating story.
