Cliff Hedges, Director of Public Safety and Security at Eastern States Exposition (ESE), has retired as of May 30, 2025.
Hedges joined ESE in 2018 after a remarkable career in law enforcement. He first worked as a police officer in Dallas, Tex., and later became a valued member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Tampa, Fla.; Boston, Mass.; and Springfield, Mass.
During his time at ESE, Hedges completed a ground-up reconstruction of the Public Safety department, calling upon his background to fortify the organization’s mission. He has developed strong relations with stakeholders in state, federal and local agencies. He implemented a mass messaging system to allow for instant communication and professionalized the security staff with features such as safety seminars for staff and metal detectors at gate entrances to streamline efficacy.
Hedges’s strides have made The Big E one of the safest fairs across the industry, which has earned him recognition through the International Association of Fairs and Expos (IAFE). The IAFE has asked Hedges to serve as their Chair of Safety and Security for the 2025-2026 term, which requires him to impart his learned experience on other leaders in the fair industry by instructing courses and overseeing the monthly meetings of the Safety and Security Committee.
“I am proud and honored to have had this opportunity to build a public safety program which focuses on our staff and guests,” shared Hedges. “I have enjoyed learning the fair business and have a totally new perspective on how important ESE and The Big E are to our area and all who love them. I feel blessed to have been able to be a small part of this wonderful organization.”
In an announcement of Hedges’s retirement, ESE President and CEO Gene Cassidy shared, “Throughout his tenure, Cliff worked diligently to strengthen relationships with our law enforcement partners, bringing everyone to the table and working in tandem toward a common goal.” Cassidy continued, “I really cannot say enough about his positive impact.”
Cassidy has requested that Hedges assist the organization with The Big E once more this fall as ESE’s Public Safety Liaison. In this role, which will be less demanding than his previous, Hedges will ensure there is effective communication amongst local police and fire departments, the Hampden County Sherrif’s Office, North American Midway Entertainment (NAME), EMTs and other emergency responders. He will aid ESE’s various departments, gate security and vendors to be certain their needs are met. Additionally, he will continue to coordinate the Quilt of Valor program, which honors veterans for their selfless achievements.
“It is time to give back to my family who also supported me through my 31-year career in law enforcement. Life is short, and I want to spend my time enjoying my grandchildren, doing a little more fly fishing and sharing what time I have with my bride of 37 years. It’s just the right time,” Hedges said.
ESE thanks Hedges for his dedication to the organization and wishes him happiness in a well-earned retirement.
