2010 John “Jack” Lyman, Jr.

Middlefield, Connecticut

Lyman is the seventh generation to operate what has become one of the most prestigious farms in Connecticut — Lyman Farm, Inc., otherwise known as Lyman Orchards. Under his leadership, the business was transformed from a wholesale farm to a popular destination that offers many value-added and experience related venues. Growing his operation into a diversified retail business was what this visionary had in mind when he became president of the farm in 1955. Known for its apples and peaches, today Lyman Orchards also has two 18-hole Robert Trent public golf courses, a retail and wholesale bakery, a large year-round Farm Market, two restaurants, two mazes, Pick-Your-Own orchards of apples, peaches, pears, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and currants, as well as other “agri-tainment” activities.

In addition, it maintains a vibrant wholesale pie business and was honored as having been named the #1 apple pie in Connecticut. Wholesale distribution includes customers like Big Y World Class Markets, and these award-winning pies have been features in its TV ads.

A well-known figure throughout the state of Connecticut and beyond, Lyman has demonstrated the ability to think beyond today and dare to dream of extraordinary things. Much more than just a successful farmer, he has been a humble citizen whose life and achievements serve as an inspiration to all.
