Begin to Spin!

Learn to make your own, unique handspun yarn on a spinning wheel! We’ll play with several types of prepared wool while we discuss wheel maintenance, drafting, treadling, plying and finishing techniques to make a balanced yarn. As time permits, we’ll touch on various types of fiber preparation and non-wool fibers. No previous experience required! Warning: spinning can be addictive!

Materials Provided: the $10 fee covers all fiber and handouts, as well as in-class use of ball winder, niddy-noddy, and lazy kate. For an additional $10, students may borrow a spinning wheel and bobbins for use in class.

Materials to bring: any treadle-driven wheel in good working condition, with at least two bobbins. Please indicate if you need to borrow a loaner wheel.

Harmony Santa

Create a 100% jolly Santa using roving and cookie cutters. This wonderful Christmas ornament was designed using Bartlett Yarns 100% 1" wool rovings. An heirloom for years to come using needle felting techniques.

Beginning Needle Tatting

Did you know that tatted lace can be made with a needle? Learn the basics of needle tatting by creating a simple ring-and-chain edging. Needle tatting is easy to pick up and flexible in material choice. Add it to your repertoire!

Rigid Heddle Weaving - Quick and Easy prep for Weaving Heddle Loom

Rigid Heddle looms are perfect looms for knitters! No need to invest in an expensive loom to weave. Class focuses on quick and easy warping of a rigid heddle loom to get you up and ready to weave. We will discuss which yarns work best on a rigid heddle, and what type of projects you can make on this loom. Each student will leave class having dressed a loom and ready to tackle their next project.

Materials Provided: Instructor will provide handouts. Schacht 15" Cricket looms will be available to rent. Students have the option to purchase the looms prior to class for a 10% discount (Weavers bringing their own looms will need to bringing all accessories needed to warp- peg, clamps, shuttle and 8 dent).

Materials to bring: Measuring tape, scissors, pen, paper, and approximately 350 yards of worsted weight wool/wool blend 2-ply yarn. Those bring their own looms will need to bring clamps, warping peg, heddle and shuttles.

Needle Felting: Form AND Function!

When needle felting, its never a good idea to stab your needle into the foam board to store it, as it damages the foam and you risk breaking the needle. Here’s a great solution – create a pin cushion! You’ll learn the techniques needed to sculpt a form and embellish it to make it fun, whimsical, pretty, cool, adorable – lots of ideas to choose from AND … we’ll add the secret element that keeps your pin cushion safe and sturdy.

Folk Art Rug Hooking

Like all old fashioned crafts, rug hooking is low-tech, simple and lots of fun! You can easily incorporate rovings, hand spun and commercial yarns, felting techniques and embellishments, once you have mastered the basics. Learn the sequence and procedure of rug hooking, from start to finish. Every step will be demonstrated. We will discuss the history and tradition of primitive rug hooking, learn about finding and preparing materials, and research sources for design inspiration. You will choose from a variety of simple folk art designed rug hooking KITS, for a small mat or chair pad, purchased directly from the instructor.

Materials Provided: Rug hooking its which includes everything needed - hook, instructions, design suggestions, binding, burlap, hoop and a selection of one-of-a-kind heirloom and hand dyed wools ($41 - $60 depends on size)

Needle Felted Landscape in the Round

This year-round ornament will be a real conversation piece, and can be scented with a drop of essential oil to make a lovely pomander as well. Learn to art of a 2D felting on a 3D felted 3" diameter wool ball. I have plenty of landscape ideas, or bring your own, We'll even attach a ribbon to hang it.

Rug Hooking for Beginners

Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on work students will experience the art of rug hooking while working on a small project to take home. This class is designed for students who have never tried rug hooking or have very little knowledge of proper technique. Students can arrive knowing little to nothing about rug hooking and will leave being able to pull loops and complete projects! Class content will include discussions of equipment, setup, proper technique and different styles.

Materials Provided: The kit ($45) - The kit for this class contains the pattern and cut wool strips. There will be 4 patterns and color schemes to choose from.

Dimensional Hooked and Prodded Blossoms

PRODDY is an old fashioned British variation of rug hooking using shaped pieces of wool fabric lifted up with a hook, wool prod or prodded clasp. This technique is PERFECT for creating beautiful three dimensional blossoms! Beautiful effects are possible when you use hand dyed 100% wool fabrics.


Materials Provided: individual flower kits will be available at a cost of $10 each, payable directly to the instructor. 15 different blossoms to choose from! Preview on my website at www.jconnerhookedrugs.com . All tools and equipment will be provided by the teacher to borrow during the class or purchase if you choose.
